Cool Active is a pioneering smart home application developed to integrate seamlessly with air conditioning units, enabling users to efficiently monitor and optimize their energy usage and CO2 emissions. This case study outlines the rapid development process and the strategic approach taken to meet the project goals set by MVST under a tight deadline.

Challenge: MVST presented an urgent requirement for the Cool Active app, aiming to provide users with a tool to effectively manage their energy consumption. The challenge was to design a mobile application that was both intuitive and functional within an extremely limited timeframe, ensuring the app could deliver on its promise to help users reduce energy costs and environmental impact.

Objective: To develop an initial concept for the Cool Active app that would allow users to seamlessly interact with their AC units, manage settings, and visualize energy and cost savings. The project demanded quick delivery of a comprehensive design that included user interface, user experience, and visual branding elements.

Solution: The solution involved a multi-faceted approach within the tight deadline:

  • Competitive Analysis and Market Research: Conducted a rapid review of the market to understand current trends and technologies in smart home applications, focusing on energy management.

  • Information Architecture: Developed a clear and logical structure for the app to ensure easy navigation and accessibility.

  • User Journey Design: Crafted a user journey that effectively showcased the app’s features, including monitoring of AC usage and CO2 emissions.

  • High-Fidelity Wireframes: Produced detailed wireframes for the onboarding sequence and the main dashboard, offering a clear visualization of the app’s interface.

  • Branding Elements: Designed a distinctive logo and thumbnail that aligned with the app’s environmental focus and digital nature, and established a coherent design language for the app’s visual elements.

Deliverables:

  • Welcome Screen: Introduces the app’s core functions and benefits.

  • Sign-Up/Login Processes: Streamlines user account setup or login.

  • Onboarding Sequence: Guides users through AC connection and preference settings.

  • Main Dashboard: Features controls for remote AC operation, displays of energy consumption, CO2 savings, cost savings, and personalized energy optimization tips.

Outcome: Despite the constrained timeframe, the initial concept for the Cool Active app was successfully delivered, meeting MVST’s requirements for a user-friendly interface that encourages energy efficiency.
