Patia - Route discovery and navigation for bikers

Patia (Greek for "path") helps young professionals (who are often preoccupied) discover new and safe routes to go cycling in their city.

This is an exercise from the Weekly Product Design Exercises newsletter shared by Artiom Dashinsky.

The task was to:

"Design a navigation app for cycling.

Most of the navigation apps are heavily oriented for either car commutes or public transportation. Consider using data about bike lanes, air pollution, bike accidents, and bike theft across the city."

When forming assumptions about the project, "Discovery" seemed to be the pain point that my (fictitious) userbase faced.

How do they know what routes are safe and also keep their bike rides fun and enjoyable?

That's where the "Safety Index" comes in, it's a composite number of how safe a route is on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 is VERY SAFE, 1 is NOT SAFE. It's calculated from data about bike accidents, bike theft, air quality, presence of bike lanes, etc.

It'll give riders more confidence and help their decision making when using the app.

Also, I don't know how well the navigation is better suited to cycling compared to cars. Maybe some real-world testing will give better insights.
