Elotera

Decided to start this illustration I entitled ‘Elotera’ a couple of days ago bc I want to create more meaningful pieces I can hang proudly at my house some time in the future. So yeah, for this particular piece I challenged myself to create a complete scenario (finally!!! lol) mainly inspired by the colors of twilights here in El Salvador. But also, the idea of creating all of this came bc in a conversation I had with my bf we were talking about how the art scene here in El Salvador is mainly influenced by foreign aesthetics rather than being based on our history and its legacy. So this was kinda an introspective exercise in which I got inspired by some photos of Salvadoran indigenous women taken by Swedish anthropologist Carl Vilhelm Hartman during his expedition journey trough Central America that took place 120 years ago (from 1897 to 1899), but also a stunning painting I found by Salvadoran painter and writer Salarrué (swipe for references). I think that as illustrators, photographers, writers (and practically any type of creative field) it should be always a challenge to take an introspective look of what is influencing our work and how we can take time to incorporate elements from our culture in our work. 🌹🌽🌸🌿🌼
