On April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made a 108-minute flight on the Vostok-1 spacecraft in Earth orbit and became the first person to leave the Earth's atmosphere.
The space capsule was lifted by the Vostok rocket, created on the basis of the R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile, from the Baikonur cosmodrome.
The launch site was about 320 km southwest, near the Tyuratam railway station (Kazakhstan), and the
name Baikonur was used to confuse and keep this place a secret. The launch pad, currently known as the Gagarin Launch, is part of the world's largest operating cosmodrome, now known as the Baikonur cosmodrome.
