Hymn to the Sun

An illustrated interpretation of JD Fergusson’s sculpture ‘Eastre: Hymn to the Sun’ (1924).

Back in the post-covid/dark-days slump of early February, I was drawn to JDF’s incredible brass sculpture of the Saxon goddess of Spring. This time of year (usually) feels so optimistic, as the days get longer and everything starts to brighten as we look towards the sun. This year, the darkness continues in the most horrible f*cking way imaginable. A friend once told me that you can only fight darkness with light (hate with love etc). There’s always some hope somewhere. JD Fergusson looked to his wife for the inspiration for this brass sculpture. That’s always a good place for me to start too.
