Turkish Coffee

The story of coffee's arrival in Vienna begins with the Ottoman empire. In 1863 when the Ottoman army was forced to retreat from laying siege to the city of Vienna they left behind 500 bags of coffee beans. The beans were acquired by Franz Kolschitzky, who had traveled in Turkey, and two years later he opened Vienna's first coffee shop.
