U is for Uncrustables, next in the 90sNibbles series! I really got into Uncrustables later in life. I would have loved skipping the torturous process of making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a kid. So many ingredients and steps, so little time to play! I don't know if Uncrustables are so good because they are tasty or if it's the lack of work that is so delicious.

The Uncrustable sandwich was developed in 1995 by David Geske and Len Kretchman to sell to schools. They have become a stape for busy parents and those needing convenience on the go. Uncrustables are simply two pieces of bread pressed together with a filling (like peanut butter and jelly) and the edges crimped. Smuckers filed for and got a patent on the crimping process. The patent reads like this:

--a first bread layer having a first perimeter surface coplanar to a contact surface;

--at least one filling of an edible food juxtaposed to said contact surface;

--a second bread layer juxtaposed to said at least one filling opposite of said first bread layer, wherein said second bread layer includes a second perimeter surface similar to said first perimeter surface;

It goes on! I didn’t know sandwiches could get so technical! I guess we should be grateful all that thought and effort went into this simple snack for us to enjoy to this day.
