The Perfumer

🍶#semiotics of perfume: The Roman Missal speaks of the 'savour of sweetness' and this is one of the elements of a sacrificial offering designed to make it acceptable to God. Aromatic perfumes played a particularly important part in Jewish rituals too. Similarly, perfumes were widely employed in ancient Greek and Roman religion, they were used as offerings and to treat or prevent illness. They were poured over statues of gods, corpses were embalmed in them, and were placed at graves. In ancient Egypt, oils that temple goddesses used for perfumes were held in high regard. The intangible but very real scent of a perfume relates it symbolically to the presence of a spirit and to the nature of the soul. Perfumes symbolize the memory and it is perhaps in this sense that they were used in funeral ceremonies. Perfumes are an expression of virtues, as well as plays an important part in purification, the more so because it is often an exhalation of such incorruptible substances as resin. It stands for perception of one's consciousness. Perfumes are a symbol of light, and in Hindu ritual associates them with the element of air. They encourage the appearance of significant images and scenes. In turn, these images arouse and redirect emotions and the distant past. Heliotrope induces images of flowers and gardens. Essence of vanilla conjures images of food. This phenomena of symbolization through sensory environment have been little studied to date. #symbols #perfume #perfumer #sensorysymbols #illustration#art #illustrationoftheday #digitalillustration #digitalart
