Nothin' Like U

I have been wanting to do a foster care piece for a while now. Usually, when I look up artwork about foster care, I find a lot of scenes of happy families having fun. No problem with that! I know a lot of people who love their foster parents. Being in foster care and especially being gay in foster care, this was not my experience. When I was in high school I honestly felt isolated and angry a lot of the time. You are already labeled a bad kid and looked at as if you are going to be just like your parents. On top of the pressure of trying to prove yourself and living in different Christian homes, coming out would have made things even harder. Art is therapy and I wanted to create something that spoke to the way I felt, how I clung to reading, music, and being raised by television to deal with an unsure time. I also wanted to show my battle with religion as I was greatly religious and battled with myself. Lastly, I chose skull butterflies because they are linked to my parents and remind me to never become them. :)I am saying this because I am fully grown and happy with who I have become. I even think about how I wouldn't do my life differently because it made me tough and the highs so much more satisfying. Again happy pride! Especially anyone who is struggling with it in foster care at this time.
