TIME - Divorced and Still Whole

TIME commissioned this illustration to accompany an article reflecting on a writer's experience with divorce.

The author, poet Maggie Smith, uses mathematical metaphors to discuss division and subtraction in the aftermath of divorce. Despite the losses, she redefines the equation, recognising unchanged constants. Smith shifts her perspective to see post-divorce life as a time of multiplication and addition.
