An Evaluative Case Study applying Design Heuristics on Yulu app

Brief

My design case study consists of 6 stages: heuristic evaluation, ideation, low-fidelity prototyping, high-fidelity prototyping, usability testing, and iteration to final UI. I selected the Yulu app and focused on improving the user flow for finding Yulu zones and available bikes within them.

User Benefit from the Redesign

  1. The number of user interactions reduces.

  2. Increases usability.

  3. Allows for faster decision making.

  4. Does not test the user’s memory.

Business Benefit from the Redesign

  1. Increases User Conversion and User Base due to increased usability and easier navigation.

  2. Reduces Session Length due to faster decision making thereby increasing Task Completion Rate.

  3. Increases Net Promoter Score (NPS) as a combined result of the above.

The Original Screens

Empathise and Define

Upon heuristic evaluation of Original Screens, a bunch of problems were found mainly pertaining to Flexibility and Efficiency of Use. The carousel was not intuitive and summarised data about zones and bikes were not available to users to make instant decisions.

Ideate

I came up with possible solutions from the gathered design principle knowledge (Hick's Law, Miller's Law, Fitt's Law etc.). The main idea being stuck to was to redesign the screens such that a compact view of available Yulu zones and bikes show up without users needing to swipe the carousel relentlessly.

Prototype - Low Fidelity

I made initial wireframes on paper and then digitised them on Marvel.

Find the LFP on Marvel here.

Prototype - High Fidelity

I created the original screens on Figma and then started off with the redesigning as per the wireframes made earlier.

Test

After creating the first set of high fidelity prototypes (HFP) it was time for usability testing with users. From the user feedback gathered, which majorly pointed at the unavailability of the Unlock feature after deciding on the zone and bike, I iterated on the HFP coming up with the Final UI.
