Pixel Art - App Concept

What did I get up to this bank holiday weekend? As a lover of pixel art, particularly from the 90s gaming era, I’d noticed that there isn’t a dedicated app connecting top-tier pixel artists with potential clients. Many pixel art apps on the app store are saturated and filled with information overload with no simple user need in mind other than to just post random pixels.

I began reaching out to top pixel artists with large followings on X, formerly known as Twitter, asking how they find work, where they get hired, and if they had a dedicated pixel artist app for getting hired, would they use it?

So far my findings were that some pixel artists:

🧚‍♂️ Find work through friends

🧚‍♂️ Get new clients from recommendations

🧚‍♂️ Mainly use X to market themselves

🧚‍♂️ Dabble in Instagram and Pinterest

🧚‍♂️ Don’t like Fiverr taking large cuts

🧚‍♂️ Apply with their personal website

🧚‍♂️ Receive work after publications

There is also pixelation.org or pixeljoint.com, but these forums contain posts that have been inactive for months, if not years. Discord servers have been great for community building, and there is also workwithindies.com and gamejobs.co, but some feel if they apply, or post on these forums, that it’s like shooting an arrow in the dark.

What if there was a pixel art app that was professional with simple hiring?

Recognising a potential need for a streamlined, professional platform for hiring pixel artists, I'd begun exploring the concept of designing an app with these key thoughts in mind. Users would be split upon sign-up between whether they were looking to hire or hiring. Onlookers can discover, like, comment, see availability and do hire requests from either home or on the profile.

As I’d begun fleshing out this concept, I’ve found that there’s so much with this idea that could be pixplored!

✨ What would the app be called?

✨ How could marketing make it compete?

✨ Can we always ensure top quality work?

And so on. For now, I’ve had fun playing around getting it to this point.
