The Pirate • Movie Title • 1948

Here’s the title card I’ve designed, lettered, and illustrated for the next film in Judy Garland’s filmography, “The Pirate.”

Cole Porter wrote the songs for this tongue-in-cheek romp about a Caribbean girl in love with the legend of a ruthless seaman. This sophisticated musical fantasy was years ahead of its time and represents some of the finest work of all the talent involved and has developed an ardent cult following. It’s one of my absolute favorites!

I wanted my titles to resemble a foil-stamped storybook cover to represent Manuela’s obsession with the legend of Mack the Black.
