Minimal Catan board

I enjoy playing Settlers of Catan. Sometimes I think about different boards to build. A friend of mine works at Autodesk, and I was thinking about trying to build something like this with the fancy machines. I'm happy with this loose idea... but how to best allow the roads and settlements to stand out?
