Making Groups Privacy Easier to Understand

Facebook Groups are used to help people build community throughout the world. Ensuring people clearly understand who can see their content and membership is crucial to helping people connect authentically.

Over the last year, we worked to understand how we can improve people’s understanding of their group’s privacy. After numerous research sessions, talking with privacy experts, and more mocks than you’d expect, we are excited to start rolling out a change to make it easier for people to understand how privacy works in Facebook Groups.

We're updating the names of group privacy levels to "public" and "private" and adding a separate control for group discoverability. This won't change how privacy works – it will just make the settings simpler to understand and use.

We're making this change because we've heard from people that they want more clarity about the privacy settings for their groups.
