Vadodara from the Sanskrit word vatodara, meaning 'in the heart of Banyan (Vata) tree. It also has another name, Virakshetra or Virawati (land of warriors), mentioned alongside Vadodara by 17th century Gujarati poet Premanand Bhatt, native to the city.
