Greater horseshoe bat

Greater horseshoe bat
Like most bats in the UK, numbers of the greater horseshoe bat has declined since the early 1900s, to around 13,000. They are found mostly around south and south west England and west Wales. Decline is mostly due to loss of insect prey, use of pesticides and habitat loss. In the past they would have roosted in caves, but now they choose the roofs of old buildings, barns and churches. They hunt and navigate by emitting high-frequency echolocation whistles through flaps on its horseshoe-shaped nose.
