Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

from The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E. L. Konigsburg

Day 18 of favorite book characters

Mrs. Frankweiler is easily the most interesting character in The Mixed-Up Files, but it's not her story. Instead she is the documenter and narrator of Claudia and Jamie's runaway adventure to the Met. Mrs. Frankweiler drops details about her life only to explain how her and the children's paths intersect, details that hint at a rich and lively past. Among other things, she is a world traveler and a high-stakes gambler. Though something of a recluse in her old age, I like to think she snuck in a few more escapades that she just didn't mention in her mysterious files.
