The most challenging part of building a dashboard is knowing how to begin. Start by answering these questions:

1. Who will be using this dashboard i.e your target audience?Are they the VPs or CFO's or Finance head or a finance manager who is working on the ground with team daily basis. Remember one size does not fill all so is the case here. The KPIs relevant to the project manager might not be equally relevant to the VPs.

2. How will they be using it?Determine the frequency of the dashboard use. Is it monthly, weekly or quarterly. This will help you in deciding the right slicing of data for the dashboard.

3. What KPI's are important for the user using this dashboard?Collate all KPI's which are tracked and discussed regularly. Find out KPI's or metrics which impact or drive the major KPIs.

Once you have answered these questions it will be a lot more easier to get started and build a dashboard.
