AI & Ghosts

The art world is losing its mind right now around AI art generators. 🎨🤖 I decided to dive in and try out DALL-E 2 because whether we like it or not, the technology is here and only going to get more advanced.

One of my theater clients allows for a ton of exploration in the play posters I create. I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to see how I could use AI as a tool to create references. For this Ghost Quartet poster, I entered terms like: "spirits, time travel, decaying bar, musical instruments, vinyl record player, mystical, haze".

You can see the evolution of the images from silly to more ethereal as I tweaked the searches to get results closer to what I had in mind. It felt like a fairly interactive process to nudge the AI in the direction I wanted it to go. From there, I referenced the images to create a sketch on my iPad.

I’ve heard these processors described as ‘souless’ but I think my final verdict is that they’re just another tool that artists can use. We got into this industry to tell stories and these cut out some of the tedious work so that we can do that more effectively. Keep on creating! 🚀
