Charcoal

For someone who spends most of his time illustrating in a very clinical vector style or hunched over a Wacom tablet I tend to really enjoy huge messy charcoal-based sprees. There is nothing quite like taping up a massive piece of paper to my equally massive drawing board and standing there and drawing with my entire arm, shoulder to fingertip, getting covered in charcoal dust and laminated in hair spray (a cheap alternative to fixative). Charcoal is probably my favourite medium to draw in and I find the process of earnest salvage versus brave intention to be the most enthralling ride I can go on with just a piece of paper and a piece of burnt wood. I adore charcoal.
