New Emoji for Windows 11

The wait is over...

“We choose COLRv0 (the original font technology) for our emoji because the format was easy to define and implement. It was scalable, and the file size small. The simplicity of the design attracted other companies to follow suit, making COLRv0 the standard for supporting flat 2D color images as well, but as emoji fonts using color bitmaps evolved, their file sizes grew. COLRv0 couldn’t scale or support a high number of layered glyphs and solid color fills, including large bitmap 3D images. The problem of integrating our emoji was a perfect scenario where we had to design a way for art and science to meet on common ground.”

Today on the blog 📝, we dive deep into the design process that has finally brought our dimensional emoji to our Windows11 users; challenges and all. Updating 2D emoji seamlessly across our diverse ecosystem has been (and is 😉) an extensive process due to the technical and design requirements of the Windows color font technology for the emoji’s functionality. We hope they’ve been worth the wait ❤️.
