Instead of doing a dark gray lightbox overlay, I tried building a CSS gradient overlay, and apply CSS’s mix-blend-mode: color-burn. The effect turned out dramatic. To help keep menu items legible, I dialed back opacity on the logo text, the menu button, and the down arrow.
