The secretive, semi-aquatic otter is one of our top predators in the UK. They disappeared from most rivers in the UK in just 50 years. It is thought that the decline was due to the combined effects of river pollution from pesticides and habitat destruction. Otters require clean rivers, a varied food supply and plenty of bank side vegetation.
