Red Squirrel
Numbers are now limited to a few parts of the UK (Northern Ireland, Scotland, Anglesey, Isle of White and a few areas of Wales, Cumbria and North Yorkshire) and time is rapidly running out for our native squirrel species. It’s estimated that the current population of red squirrels in the UK is approx. 140k compared to 2.5 million grey squirrels, which were introduced to the UK in the 1870s. The two squirrels cannot live together, the grey squirrel is the far more successful species, who also transmit a virus which can kill red squirrels, but which grey squirrels are immune to.
